The Electromagnetic Pulse Technology is an emerging technology that offers significant promise as a viable joining, forming or cutting method for the aerospace, automotive, mechanical industry and electronics industries. The potential benefits include reduced cost, enhanced performance, and increased capability for joining different material combinations.
The process relies on a magnetic field generated by discharging a capacitor bank into a specially designed coil. The intense magnetic field in turn creates extremely high eddy currents in the component next to the coil. These eddy currents create an intense magnetic field of opposite polarity to that in the coil.
The result of these opposing magnetic fields is an acceleration of the outer part into the other tubular component or an acceleration of a sheet metal into a forming mold by pushing the metal well beyond its dynamic yield strength into its plastic region.
